July 16:  Finally to banding.  Roswitha and I were out by 5:30 only to be met by flashes of lightening and rain.  We only opened up net one and got the feeders all going again.  I spent another couple of hours trying to get the &@#*^% lock together.  Finally on the Xth try the screws actually went into the holes and I was able to tighten it up.  Glad I don't have to crawl through holes to get the shed open.  By the way we caught nothing with just the one net. Temperature was only in the mid 20s but humidity was 84%.  Not nice!

July 15:  We were supposed to start banding today but Gerda and I had some babysitting to do for Sabrina so we put things off.  In the evening Alex came over and helped Gerda and I  put the new door into the shed.  Whoever invented those locking mechanizims probably also invented the Rubics Cube.  What a time we had trying to get those screws to match up and screw the thing together once it was on the door.  Gave up and screwed the door closed but had to crawl through a hole to get out.

July 14:  Kim, Roswitha, Gerda and Jim.  We went out to cut back the net lanes and get the grass mowed.  Very hard work with the temperature in the 30s and humidity over 80%.  We quit about 9:30 just because of the heat.  Managed to get 1, 2, 7, 8, 9 cleaned up.  This left 3, 4, 5 yet to be done.

June 18:  Banding Demonstrations for Fairview Avenue Public School Grade 6 pupils from Laurie Booker's class. Roswitha and I didn't go out until 8 and the pupils didn't come until closer to 10.  The weather was hot and humid with 26 degrees in sun and 21 in shade.  Wind SSE at 2 km/hr.  We had an interesting morning with the following birds being banded.  Hairy Woodpecker 2, Great Creasted Flycatcher 3,  Tree Swallow, Traill's Flycatcher, Yellow Warbler, Brown-headed Cowbird, Orchard Oriole = 10, retrapped 2, saw 27 species.

June 3:  Jim, Sashi, Sarah.  Again plants soaking wet from the overnight rain.  Temperature 17 with no wind.  Slow going and only picking up slightly after things had dried up a little.
Banded: Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Traill's Flycatcher 5, American Robin 2, Gray Catbird 2, Common Yellowthroat, Common Grackle a hatch year bird = 12, retrapped 6, saw 31 species.

June 2:  Jim, Roswitha, Kim, Sashi.  Plants and ground soaking wet.  We did three net rounds and got one bird and decided to close and go looking for birds.  While closing we picked up two more birds making a total of 3.  American Robin, Warbling Vireo and Common Yellowthroat.
The Trip Looking for Birds- Dunnville to Cayuga by back roads and back down the West side of River to Dunnville.
Noteworthy for me were the two pair of Sandhill Cranes on the West side of the Grand River, between Cayuga and Dunnville.  Both pairs had young.  Considering the other pair I saw when doing my Baillie means at least three pair in this area plus another pair that I have heard about on the East side of the river.  We had a great view of the Osprey with the male dragging a stick to the nest causing us some initial identification problems because the stick looked like legs yet it sure wasn't a Heron or a Crane. The female Osprey got off the nest when he arrived and we could see the large difference in size between the two sexes.  Bobolinks and a heard Meadowlark plus Mocking bird gave us a few birds to justify the trip.

June 1:  I cancelled banding because of the rain during the first part of the morning.

Ruthven Birding Weekend
