May 2010

Continuing with the poor bird numbers experienced this Spring May had a total of
678 birds banded.  We had 2,262 net hours giving us 30 birds per 100 net hours.
Total birds for the season is 1,084.  I expect we may achieve 1,100 birds with the few days in June that we will be banding.  The station will close for the season on Friday.
Comparison of other Spring seasons are:
2001--1961--- 43 birds/100 net hours
2002--2,283--62
2003--2,443--53
2004--2,565--49
2005--1,302--40
2006--no banding
2007--1,598--47
2008--1,553--37
2009--1,502--42
2010--1100 aprox--29 birds/100 net hours
Explanations as to why the numbers are so low may be forthcoming.  Some say because of weather disturbances in lower states pushing birds west.  I'm not sure but it sure made for quick processing after every net run and endless time to sit and talk.
