Well that is it for another year. My 11th. Fall. 3,675 of 90 species with some record numbers for some species like White-throated Sparrow with 439 birds banded with second highest year being 336 in 2004. After a really poor Spring in which I was worried about where the birds have gone to a fantastic Fall where the lack of birds was more than made up. We ended up with 58 birds/100 net hours which is lower than some years.
Thanks once again to all my volunteers who worked hard through the over 100 bird days. I will be working on my reports through this coming week and I am really thankful that I managed to keep up with data through this whole Fall leaving me with only reports to do. Have a great winter.
Nov. 6: Jim, Roswitha, Kim, Jason, and Rob Nash. We didn't start until 10 because the main purpose was to dry nets out after the two days of rain and then get them packed away for the season. We had a nice sunny day to get it done. Banded: Brown Creeper, American Tree Sparrow 2, Fox Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Cedar Waxwing 2, Slate-coloured Junco 4, American Goldfinch 2 = 13, retrapped 5. It was great to fininsh up with a flock of 15 Tundra Swans that flew over. I always see them in the Spring but seldom in the Fall.
Nov. 3: Roswitha, Kim, Jason. Good old me managed to twist my ankle yesterday and didn't notice it until I went to get up this morning. They had a good day. Banded: Black-capped Chickadee, Golden-crowned Kinglet, American Tree Sparrow 5, Swamp Sparrow 2, White-throated Sparrow 5, Dark-eyed Junco 5 = 19. retrapped 12, saw 18 species.
Nov.2: Jim, Kim, Rick, Jason, Dora: Again a cool morning with -4 and poles and nets covered in hore frost. It was really pretty useless until the sun melted the nets into a uniform black rather than the previous black and white. Breeze from N.W. The end of migration is near. Banded: Black-capped Chickadee, Hermit Thrush, Northern Cardinal, American Tree Sparrow 6, Fox Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco 4, Purple Finch 3, Pine Siskin 3, American Goldfinch 2, House Sparrow = 25, retrapped 13, saw 29 species.
Nov. 1: Jim, Roswitha, Kim, Jason: We had -3 this morning with a wind from the north. Noticeably quieter on opening. Nets frosted. Banded: Downey Woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadee 5, although we have not seen the thousands of some other stations we have had a steady number of new Chickadees to band. Red-breasted Nuthatch, Golden-crowned Kinglet 3, Eastern Bluebird, Hermit Thrush 4, Cedar Waxwing 10 and still flocks in the area, strangley all young birds. American Tree Sparrow 17, Fox Sparrow 3, Song Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow 3, White-throated Sparrow 2, Eastern White-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Purple Finch 4, American Goldfinch 4 = 61, retrapped 12, saw 33 species.
