American Redstart, After Hatch Year Male. It takes these guys until the second Fall after hatching to show this kind of colour.
Pierre-Alexandre, from Sherbrook Quebec, with American Redstart.
Another challenge for identification. Is it Blackpoll, Baybreasted? Nope it is a Pine Warbler and not a Cape May as I originally thought.
September 5 and these House Wrens are just coming out of the nest. Wings still in pin-feathers, hardly any tail, huge gape. Their 3rd nesting?
A chance to put new learning into practice. Discussion with Allen Chartier on this species showed that these are older birds in basic plumage. Retained secondaries indicates an After Second Year male. Second year male would show browner secondries. Hatch Year birds would show all brown. In an e-mail, Peter Pyle indicated that the brown on the body is worn away through the winter revealing the pure black that I am used to.
